Description:

The purpose of this book is to address Disaster Risk Management as an integral part of building resilience in a community to cope with stressors due to natural hazard events, and specifically the contribution of engineering to achieve it. The book does not purport to address man-made events, although human actions may play a role in causing complex events and are mentioned in some sections. Stressors can be sudden shocks, like an earthquake, or slow chronic events, like Climate Change. Resilience is defined as the ability of a society to cope, as a system, with stress factors related to its development, resisting, adapting and recovering in relation to their impacts.
