RESILIENT CULTURAL HERITAGE TO BUILD CAPACITY AND REDUCE DISASTER RISKS
The Technical Committee on Disaster Risk Management of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the Peruvian Engineers Association (CIP) are organizing this important event to be held on February 2nd, at 15.00 hrs. in London and 16:00 hrs. in Paris.
Cultural heritage plays a double role in disaster risk management: it needs special protection due to its specific vulnerabilities in the face of disasters, and at the same time, provides resources to reduce risks, such as traditional knowledge and practices, and to engage communities in building capacity and increasing resilience. This talk will review the evolution of DRM of cultural heritage, from key concepts to good practices and lessons learned, through international programs and initiatives, including innovatives methodologies to engage communities and increase their capacity and resilience, in order to protect themselves and their heritage.

Msc Barbara Minguez Garcia is a Disaster Risk Management and Cultural Heritage Specialist, with over 13 years of international experience. She is currently holding the position of Senior Associate, Cultural Heritage Resilience, at McAllister and Craig Disaster Management. Barbara has worked at the UNESCO Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit, the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) in several countries and projects, including Central America region, Ecuador, Myanmar, Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Japan, among others. Before she worked at the Cultural Offices of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. and the Spanish Consulate in New York, N.Y., and collaborated with the U.S. National Parks Service (NPS). Barbara is member of the International Committee on Risk Preparedness (ICOMOS-ICORP); mentor for ICCROM’s First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis and Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action Programs; and Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Disaster Mitigation for Urban Cultural Heritage, Ritsumeikan University. |

Dr Valentina Putrino is currently a Catastrophe Risk Analyst at Ariel Re. She obtained her PhD from University College London (UCL), focusing on developing a framework for multi-hazard assessment of historic stonework structures. She currently holds the position of Chair of the EEFIT Committee, she is the SECED Representative for the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) – Committee on Disaster Risk Management (CDRM), and is also the designated liaison member between both SECED and EEFIT committees. |
